A unique way to shop for children’s gifts

happy and surprisedA few years ago I started taking each grandchild shopping for their Christmas gift. We discuss where we will shop, a budget, and remind them to select items their parents would approve. The unique part is I buy the gift right then and there with them by my side. Yet they have to wait until Christmas to officially get it.
While this sounds unusual, it allows time with each child and it gives the child something to look forward to.
They pick out what they want, carry it to the car, and sometimes help hide it or put it under the tree. The concept of delayed gratification applies here. It is sometimes hard to wait! I ask them to act happy and surprised when they open their gift on Christmas.
This is a grandchild being surprised and happy.
